George Lockerby Ramsay

George Ramsay was born in upstate New York in 1947. As the third generation of artists, music and artistic expression were always encouraged at home. From an early age, his passions were directed toward creation in the art world and building in the structural world.

He attended Art Institute of Boston and continued on scholarships to the San Francisco Art Institute. From 1978 to 1999 he produced a large portfolio of work which has been exhibited throughout the Northern California including alongside the works of Elmer Bischoff, David Park, Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud.

Inspired by the natural beauty of Northern California he gravitated toward painting plein air and has traveled extensively throughout the counties Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin finding new and challenging compositions to express.

Ramsay was diagnosed in the prime of his career with throat cancer which he battled for several years eventually losing to the disease. Though much of his work is held privately throughout the country, this collection has recently become available to the public.

George Ramsay is an esteemed artist based in Northern California whose work primarily focuses on painting plein air. His artistic practice is heavily influenced by the stunning landscapes and sceneries of Northern California which he captures with great dexterity and finesse. With a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the interplay of location and light, Ramsay's works exude a sense of ethereal beauty and serene tranquility. Through his paintings, he invites viewers to a journey of rediscovering the captivating allure of the natural world. With each brushstroke, Ramsay brilliantly encapsulates the ever-changing essence of Northern California, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who behold his works.
